Dr Siobhan O’Leary
The people I’ve been lucky enough to work with have taught me that while anyone can struggle with mental health difficulties, we all have the ability to lessen that struggle. But sometimes we cannot do it alone.
Complete acceptance and non-judgement anchor my approach because, no matter what the work is, everything begins and ends with the therapeutic relationship. Without trust, true change cannot occur.
I’m deeply grateful that people allow me into the most difficult aspects of their lives. It’s a privilege to be there as they transform. In return, I try to be the most present, committed and effective therapist I can.
Credentials
Following my three-year BSc degree in psychology, I graduated in 2008 from Royal Holloway, University of London with first-class honours. I then started work in psychological assessment and treatment services within the NHS.
In 2010 I began the three-year doctoral training course in clinical psychology at University College London. Personality disorder, trauma, complex presentations and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy became specialisms after qualifying, and I led teams in forensic and non-forensic inpatient settings.
Since 2015 I practised privately alongside professional posts, providing thousands of hours of evidence-based therapies for the breadth of mental health presentations across the lifespan.
As a clinician, I now work solely in private practice while pursuing my training and academic interests in Schema Therapy and cognitive neuroscience. I also provide expert consultation for TV and film, with dramas I recently advised on being produced for Sky (The Fear Index), Netflix (Everything Now), Paramount+ (Insomnia) and ITV (To Be Announced).
Registrations
I’m assigned to the Health and Care Professions Council who regulate clinical psychologists in the UK. Synthesis Therapies is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office for clients’ data protection. I’m verified by Psychology Today and with The Private Practice Register for secure billing for insured clients.
Testimonials
“As a person, she is genuinely caring, knowledgable and an amazing individual to have been treated by. My zest for life is a keepsake of the time spent together.”
“I know this message might be a bit out of the blue but I have recently been reflecting a lot on my journey in the last few years and you've been a massive part of it and I just want to say THANK YOU!
There have been some difficulties recently, like always in life, but for the first time in about 24 years I am not falling back into the pattern of letting [anorexia] dictate me. On the contrary. I have never felt more happy with my body. I would be lying if I said I absolutely love it but I definitely feel grateful for it, and I am loving it more every day. As opposed to loathing it and wanting to fix it every day. I know now there is nothing to fix as my body is perfect the way it is. It is truly amazing. It has supported me all my life and above all given my beautiful boy a safe home for 9 months.
I feel happy with my body and grateful for my little belly pouch that gave me my gorgeous little boy (not so little anymore by the way). And without you I know I would be struggling with it. You gave me the means of understanding myself and you helped me to see me for more than just flesh and believe that I am worthy of love and respect regardless of what [anorexia] tells me. And for that I will forever be grateful. Without you I honestly don't think I could fully enjoy being a Mum! Thank you for being the amazing person you are.
Please feel free to share this on your website as you truly are an amazing therapist and you are the person thanks to whom I am in recovery. After 24 years! When I honestly thought it was not possible.”
“When I first was diagnosed I was losing hope of all help. I found my trust in professionals dissolved. I was very sceptical on how much help was needed with my condition. Upon meeting Siobhan my outlook and faith that my issues were normal due to my background grew. She made me stop feeling so negative and hard on myself and left me with skills so I can continue to make my life better.
Her sessions help me problem solve and understand why I feel how I do and this helped me build in confidence and learn to find different solutions. In the years of seeing different mental health professionals she is only therapist that helped me find a way. Without her patience and understanding I wouldn’t be in the place I am now.
Although she could not wave a magic wand she made me see a future with my complex PTSD, in it being manageable and more understood, which means it’s no longer my enemy, it’s more like an old friend. Once you understand it it’s no longer a demon, you can move forward with more peace. Without the understanding and patience, without these sessions, I don't think my recovery could have been this successful. Although I have a way to go I feel it’s a journey I can continue to be a stronger and happier person.
If you are looking for someone who is patient, fair, hard when needed and gets you to look into your issues in a safe environment, Siobhan is someone I would recommend - and from someone who has never had any faith in help, I was a tough patient and she could see I was resisting at times, I wanted to give up and she helped me work out what was best for me.”
“I am a mature intelligent woman, recently retired from a good job I loved. I now live alone and have the strength to deal with this as I have throughout my whole life with it’s normal ups and downs. I am very sociable with a good friends network and many interests.
Suddenly to my surprise and after a tough couple of years with an ageing mother who passed away and other concerns with a son, his marriage and my grandchildren, I became a person who I no longer recognised, nor even liked very much. My half full cup, became half empty, my tolerance level was zero and along with other symptoms previously unknown to me and alien to my usual self.
Short circuit to my visit and sessions with Dr O’Leary. I dreaded the first one as it is my nature to be self-contained and not speak openly. Dr O’Leary was gentle and skilled at getting to the heart of the problems. I found myself opening up easily and her response amazed me. I would say ‘how did we get to that!’ Now I can see what I couldn’t unravel on my own. And so, I felt validated as opposed to feeling ‘weak’. From thereon we found and named many issues. Even more, she helped me with coping mechanisms. Seeing things more clearly helped me on the road to improvement.
I would have struggled to cope with this present world pandemic without my meetings with her beforehand. I will continue to meet with her as and when I feel the need and will be forever grateful for her professionalism, her understanding and her very skilled help with my healing.”
“When life came crashing down, I will never be able to express how grateful I am that Dr O’Leary was my therapist. She has the perfect balance of professional expertise, instilling confidence and the trust needed to help me to realise where my pain lies, understand how they have effected my entire life choices and now we are starting the healing! More importantly she is human, non-judgmental, relatable and pure lovely.”
“After time of just listening, and listening without judgement, I felt safe in confiding but also in building a very strong bond of mutual trust and open, honest communication.”
“We got to the point of thoroughly going through the core issues which trauma held against me, and that was undeniably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through, however having a one-person pillar of support allowed me to progress in ways surprising to myself.”
“The trust, the clinical skill set, professionalism and the competency are of the highest recommendation.”
“I learned skills through dealing with my past, and learned to manage myself in the present - to stay in the moment - and also build resiliency against things which may come. If you have anyone like Siobhan for your care, then I am certain you will become better, more healed, safer and healthier than maybe you knew possible.”
